Crowns and Bridges Q&A

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are dental restorations that repair teeth that are damaged, decaying, or missing.

Crowns

Traditional crowns are dental caps that fit over the surface of a tooth to restore it and protect it from future damage after your dentist removes any decay.

Implant-supported crowns replace missing permanent teeth by securely attaching to metal artificial tooth roots (dental implants).

Bridges

Bridges also replace missing permanent teeth. Traditional bridges consist of an artificial tooth bonded to two adjacent crowns. Implant-supported bridges contain multiple artificial teeth attached to dental implants placed in your jawbone.

Are crowns and bridges right for me?

Crowns and bridges and restore or replace permanent teeth that are:

  • Decaying
  • Chipped
  • Cracked
  • Broken
  • Misshapen
  • Weak
  • Loose
  • Missing
  • Unsightly
  • Discolored
  • Jagged

These dental restorations make treated teeth stronger, whiter, brighter, and even-shaped without pain or invasive procedures.

To determine if crowns and bridges are right for you, the Keller Smiles team examines your gums and teeth. They review your oral health history, take dental X-rays if needed, and ask about your symptoms and treatment preferences before tailoring your dental treatment plan.

If you first need a tooth extraction or bone grafting, your Keller Smiles dentist offers these services prior to crown and bridge placement to ensure highly effective, long-lasting results.

What should I expect when getting crowns and bridges?

During crown or bridge placement, your dentist cleans your teeth, removes any decay, and prepares the affected teeth. If you’re a candidate for implant-supported crowns and bridges, your dentist places the implants into your jawbone.

They create custom-fitted crowns or bridges that attach to the implants or bond over the top of your natural teeth to restore your smile.

What happens after receiving crowns and bridges?

After the procedure, you can enjoy a beautiful, healthy smile. Protect your crowns and bridges by not chewing on hard objects, brushing your teeth after meals, flossing daily, and seeing the Keller Smiles team at least every six months for routine dental cleanings and exams.
